I also remembered the line that dismissed the jars analogy from having read the story in another context, but didn't know whether it was just another version of the same story that occurred elsewhere in the gemara. B&R tend to edit together variants of the same narrative that are found in different sites, so I thought that was possibly what was going on-- but that doesn't seem to be the case here.
